The Keeper's Log

The Thread That Binds the Society

A subscription to The Keeper's Log, a 48-page, glossy quarterly is included with all levels of membership. Each issue is historical in nature, usually featuring a famous American lighthouse as the cover story, followed by a human-interest article and, often, a foreign lighthouse story.

Other subjects explored are related aids-to-navigation (history of lightships, fog signals, etc.) and a technical section called Clockworks. Some issues also feature Pages from the Past (excerpts from actual light keeper's logs), and articles reprinted from the U.S. Lighthouse Service Bulletins, published monthly from 1912-1939.

In addition to the historical articles, there is also a section titled Notice to Keepers.  This section is contemporary, telling about current events in our five Districts (New England, North Atlantic, South Atlantic & Gulf Coast, Great Lakes and West Coast). In this section you'll find information about newly restored light stations, those open to the public, groups looking for caretakers for their light stations, and even the occasional lighthouse for sale. Some issues also include book and video reviews, foreign affairs, letters to the head keeper and poetry. The entire Keeper's Log is laced with historic and contemporary photographs taken from the U.S. Lighthouse Society's extensive archive.

30th Anniversary Issue of The Keeper's Log

This issue was published in November 2014 to celebrate the Society's first 30 years. Chronicling our journey from the early years to the present, this issue recognizes individuals and groups that played an important role in supporting our mission. This complete issue has been digitized and is now available for all to read. View this issue.
