Rooted in Historical Puget Sound
Over thirty years ago, Wayne Wheeler started the U. S. Lighthouse Society on his dining room table in San Francisco. As the Society grew, the headquarters was moved to a high-rise office building in the heart of the financial district on Kearny Street where it remained for many years. Now, Society's headquarters moved once again, but this time we have the privilege of being located at an actual light station in the beautiful Puget Sound area. More specifically, the Point No Point Light Station just north of Seattle.
This very important relocation enables the U. S. Lighthouse Society to achieve some important objectives. First, we are enjoying more square footage which has allowed us to expand our research library and archive. Secondly, the rent we now pay is directed to the preservation of a lighthouse which supports our core mission. And lastly, operating at a light station gives all of us here at headquarters first hand experience as keepers, and the unique ability to practice what we preach!
A Region Steeped in Martime History and Tradition
Other benefits to the relocation include the fact that many new people have the opportunity to learn about the Society as this property hosts thousands of lighthouse visitors every year. Also, we have transformed the historic keeper's home into a vacation rental, so now those interested will have the opportunity to spend the night at the lighthouse with all the comforts of home when conducting research or while on a lighthouse holiday. And now, our incredible new home gives us the ability to extend our influence, ideas and dreams with the people of the Pacific Northwest, a region steeped in maritime history and tradition.
