Lyly Gun Display at the Whitefish Point Shipwreck Museum
In the display, the info card reads:
"In 1878 David Lyle designed a gun that was lightweight and easily manuverable. It was a life saving device used by the U.S. Life-Saving Service as a shore-bound connection to a ship in distress. A line was attached to a projectile that was fired across the bow of a ship in distress. The line would then be tied to the highest point on the ship and a breeches bouy attached. The breeches bouy consisted of a cork life ring connected to a pair of canvas breeches (pants). When the breeches buoy was suspended from the life line, this system could allow the stricken vessel's crew to be pulled to safety above the waves from ship to shore."
